Welcome to the Byzantine Empire |
First Ecumenical Council of Nicea
In 325 the bishops: St. Basil. and St Athanasios met together for a meeting called by Constantine. He called the meeting to unify people but the church took it as an opportunity to discuss views of Doctrine. This happened when the capitol was still Rome (325 AD). Heretics talked about the second person of the Trinity that it is first born of all creation. But the bishops argued saying: The second person of the Trinity had no beginning. Saint Spyridon, St. Nicholas, and St. Gregory the Theologian also joined into the meeting. There, they established the date for Pascha (Easter). And they questioned on how they should explain the Trinity. They agreed that the Trinity is Homo (same) Ousios (substance) instead of Homoi (like) Ousios (substance). But a deeper question came to them "Did the Logos or the second person of the Trinity come from the father? Or was he always there? The Bishops fought against the heretics and still no one actually knows the answer.
